Warrior upgrade is it WORTH it??????

Hey everyone...!! TECH QUESTION
I have a 99 warrior blowing smoke very little! Bike is in good shape but i'm not sure do I keep it and beef it up or get something faster.
I was told by a friend who works at a shop that for $400 he could put a cam and a high compression piston along with a valve spring kit. He's charging me 200 to put it in!
My question is how much power will i gain by doing that!
I want to be able to be as fast a 400ex or more! Do u guys think it's impossible or what!
Let me know what ya think !!!
thanks

Anythings possible with money. If it's smoking you'll either need valve seals or a new top end. With the mods you plan on doing to it this should take care of the smoke. A big part of the hp gain depends on how high compression piston you go and how radical of a cam you go with. After you do all that you might want to raise the gearing a little since it'll have more power.
Is it worth it? That's up to you. Just depends on what you'd rather do.

I'm kind of having the same question. I have a 2001, and it smokes some when it gets really hot. I'm not sure to keep it, hop it up a little, or sell it and get another bike like a 400ex or z400. I's probably be looking to spend about $1500 or so, maybe less for a 400ex, maybe a z400. I think if I put 1500 in the warrior, it would probably be as fast as a 400ex.
Some of the reasons to go to a 400ex, are handling and weight distribution. A friend has one, and it seems to jump better, turn better, etc. My warrior seems pretty front heavy. I think a major problem with the 400ex is no reverse, and no water cooling.
The z400 looks pretty cool and has reverse and water cooling. I have a suzuki streetbike and really like it, so I'd think suzuki would make a good quad. Maybe the drawbacks are that it is first year, and is maybe hard to come across a deal.
Probably other pros/cons for these bikes, and probably other bikes that I haven't mentioned, like raptors, DS's.
I guess it comes down to if you really like your warrior, and think that it could fulfill your needs. I'm still trying to decide that for myself.

I did the cam/piston/springs/k&n/jetting and my warrior would hang with 400ex's with mild tuning, pipe/filter. pretty much even in a here to there drag the 400 would get better starts though but I did pull out a win once out of 5 or so races.

Warrior348,
I just recently installed the parts you are talking about. Although the performance increase is not real evident in the seat of the pants meter to me, it definately shows against drags with my buddies warrior, especially from 3rd gear on. Also shows on the hills, certianly has more grunt on the hills. I'm yet to run any 400ex's.

348,
One more thing you may want to consider is adding an oil cooler, modding an air cooled motor will tend to produce even more heat, and that is the performance killer. For about 95 bucks or so,you can get an add on oil cooler kit from FST,just needs some holes drilled for fittings. If you have access to some bone yards, a Big Bear or Wolverine oil filter cover will bolt on,and has cooler line fittings built in,just have some hoses made up, and add the cooler of your choice. You will find the motor will keep making power a lot longer and better if you can keep the temp under control.

I was thinking of putting an oil cooler on. Is the FST cooler worth getting? Is it very large? I was also wondering if an oil reservior might help, kind of like what the 400ex has.

preston7,
The FST cooler fits between the frame rails near the top shock mounts,so it is tucked up out of harms way pretty good. I don't think an oil res. would do a lot of good, you would need some kind of pump to pull it out,the 400ex has it because it is a dry sump set up,it is built to pull the oil from a resivoir.

I would hate to sound like a typical Honda owner, but that is probably how this is going to come across.
My buddy owns a Warrior. He's had it about a year and a half now, and he has had good luck with it for the most part.
Anyway, I recently bought my EX and I let him drive it. He took it up a paved road and around the lawn first. He said it felt a lot different than the Warrior, but he didn't think that it was unbelievably faster (which for the most part I agree).
Well, I took my Banshee and he took the 400 and we went and played on a dirt road, and then on a little trail with some water bars for him to jump.
Let me say that he was very impressed. He loved the handling, and he loved the suspension. Also, the EX might not be insanely faster than a Warrior, but the extra power is there and you can feel it. You can just feel the tourque at all RPM's in all gears...the Warrior has it down low, but it runs out of steam when you get moving.
All I can say is that he has ridden his Warrior once in the last month and a half. We had been riding just about every Sunday or Saturday for the last 3 years so it's highly unusual.
Another friend and I went riding yesterday. I called out buddy with the Warrior and he said that he didn't want to go. When I asked why he said "I don't want my 4-wheeler anymore". When I asked him what he was talking about he said "I want a Z400".
I don't have enough seat time on a Warrior to not like them...However, there must be a reason that he doesn't even want to ride his anymore.
Any comments, just shout.
