Help wanted with 680 raptor
#1
I have a "02" raptor built by trinity late last fall. Took delivery last Dec. Have only about 100 hrs. on it. While flat track racing after a race my coolant was boiling out of the puke tank. I topped it off, raced again and it started blowing smoke and all the coolant was gone from the tank. Took a compression reading and had 120lbs. I talkedto aaron at trinity he said it was a head gasket. Pulled the head gasket out and saw nothing obveously wrong. I've tried to talk to Harry but he's always busy. Has anyone else had this problem. I thought I'd get better reliablity. I hope nothing else is wrong!! Maidwright

Is your header torqued to the correct specs? Just wondering b/c I had a car that the coolant would evaporate from due to an exhaust leak. Not sure the connection exactly but in any event when I fixed the headers the coolant stayed. This may not help anything at all for you but just a thought.

I would bet money that it is the head gasket!
Did you retorque the head bolts after cam breakin or after a couple of hours of initial riding when you got the motor back?
Have you ever noticed you were running hot at any time?
Have you checked your thermal switch to make sure it opens by the 212 degree limit?
I'm not sticking up for Trinity, but the majority of the time these problems stem from other failures, not the motor itself. The head gasket doesn't usually fail for no reason. "Typically" these would be the causes: your motor got to hot to begin with, you never retorqued the head bolts or the head gasket was damaged during installation.
You should call and speak with Harry personally, he is a stand up individual.

After I got the quad back I was never given any type of instruction on after break in things to check. I asked for this info when it was shipped but never got any. I did'nt know trinity valve specs were different than the factory until reading it here.My fan works but not sure of either thermal switch. This was a brand new quad when it came to me. I would have thought it was ok since it was new. I guess that's my mistake. I hope I can talk with Harry tues. What is the difference between a 680 and a 686 anyway?

Part of the break-in specs should have included telling you to retorque thehead bolts. If not, make sure to bring that up with Harry.
I don't know where you read that the valve spec's are different, but they shouldn't be. Adjusting them should be the same as stock for both exhaust and intakes.
I have heard of quite a few thermal switches failing, you should check it when you get a chance. Again though, the safest way is to wire the fan up directly to a toggle switch. Thi8s way you know that the fan is on when you need it most!
Regarding the difference between a 680 and 686, if it came from Trinity it is a 686. I have no idea how you would achieve a 680.
Harry can be hard to get a hold off, no doubt. If they ask you if you want to hold because he is on another line, then yes, hold. Leaving a message doesn't always work either, so you might just have to call back. Be persistant, he get's alot of calls, I know, I have been on the phone with him alot lately.

Thanks swytak Talked to harry today he agreed it's a head gasket and said I should retorque my head after the first warm-up. he said it's a hassle but well worth the time It would probibly eliminate it from happening again.. Thanks Harry, next time it'll be a high rpm 727!!!
