Kodiak 400 Question
#1
Hello,
I have a question concerning the Kodiak 400. My wife and I plan on buying one in a couple of months. I used to ride a Polaris and had pretty good luck with it, but I love the looks of the new Yamahas, and have never heard anything really bad about them.
I did notice the Kodiak 400 doesn't have a Hi and Lo range on the tranny and I just wondered if this would be a problem burning up the belt. The dealer says no, but I would feel more comfortable with real experience. I live in the mountains of Colorado and will be riding double sometimes about (400 lbs. total). Will this cause any problems not having lo range? Or should I go the extra money and get the 450. I really like the simplicity of the 400, but don't want to chance tearing anything up.
Also, how does anyone like the kodiac 400/450?
Thank you for any information.

2003 400's do not have hi or low or park. The rear disk brake on the 02's was replaced my a drum for the 03's also. I think you would be much happier with a Kod 450. If your riding double, especially up hills, I think you will find the power of the 400 (without low) inadequate. I ride double a lot (around 300 lbs) and with 26" vamps (and before the mods you see below) my 02 barely had enough power in low to get us up a good hill. The kodiak 400 will have an awesome ride, excellent turning radius, and good speed, but lacks the power that you will regret not having when you need it. Do yourself a favor and get the 450.
