Raptor guys....Clutch question
#1
just curious as to what u guys use as far as clutch parts.
with the dirt bikes and street stuff, factory was the way to go. always has been since I been in the business.
I was wondering, because everything else seems to be different, what you guys use?
I was thinking of using an aftermarket stiffer spring along with stock plates. what I am trying to get rid of is the slop that develops as the bike and clutch get hot. This also might have something to do with the aluminum clutch rod expanding as it gets hotter I believe. If so is there one that you can switch out made of another alloy maybe or steel? Just curious as we have not had anything like that arise at the dealer. Even the Yamaha field rep said "oh just adjust it while you are riding" I was like no **** Im just trying to make life a little easier.
Any ideas boys?

i didn't have any prob. when the motor got warmer, the clutch never needed adjusting. i ran castrol 5-30, ibroke my clutch basket so i went with an after market clutch and heavier springs and i had to keep adjusting it, now i switched back to stock fibers and plates with the heavier springs, the type oil you run might have somthing to do with it. hope this helps

oh man I didnt even think of the oil. I feel like an idiot now
I do have 10/30 Yamalube in it now. I was going to try the Yamaha 4R race oil but we will see. Im gonna try 20/40 and see what the deal is. I have heard of a gross majority of the ones that we sell new doing this and other owners have complained as well to me at work.
we will see.

I did eliminate my ebrake and all today and put a YZ set up on my bike with ez adjust perch and it did get slightly better and now I can use one finger on the clutch which I couldnt before as easy. I just dont like the idea of the aluminum rod and wonder why it isnt steel. Anyone know if it is steel in the dual purpose XZ660 or whatever it is called that this motor came out of?

3GROC, What all did you have to remove? Cables wires etc & what did you have to do with the wiring?
I want to get rid of my parking brake & that huge clutch perch also.
I was thinking about a Honda perch, How do you like the YZ perch?
Did you need to use a diffrent clutch cable?

I removed mine as well, all of it. I got a clutch perch and e-brake block off from Magic for cheap. It looks pretty good and works great.
I cut the wires that controll the stuttering and put butt connector style crimps on the end of them to keep them from shorting out. The other wire is in there still just rolled up nice and neat, zip tied.

3GROC and "THEMOOSE"
I am also interested in that same question THEMOOSE posed about the clutch perch "clean up job" so if you guys come up with detailed information care to pass along to me. This thread or PM me would be great.
Thanks,

guys,
there are 3 wires from the perch to the wire harness behind your plastic. disconnect the one with the white connector and seal it with silicon. disconnect the other two and plug them into each other thereby completing the circuit.
watch out. you can now start your bike while in gear and launch into whatever you are pointing at.lol. no I have not launched...yet!

I have a YZ lever and perch on my raptor. I have a moose quick adjust nut on the perch tho. I forget what year it was I think like a 97 YZ. whichever one it is it is the perch that doesnt have the NEW adjusters like the new YZs have. its old style cable adjusters.
also you just unplug the e brake sensor....and you plug the clutch sensor (to start when you are in gear with the clutch pushed in) into each other. they are a male.female plug so just unplug the 2 and plug them into each other. Yank the cable out...get a block off plate like the one from NACS and you arein business. Took me 5 mins to do.
you can use any clutch perch and lever that you want to. it doesnt matter it is all feel.
both sensor plugs are behind the radiator somewhat so you have to take hte hood off to get to them easier.
hope that helps
