<< If you pull reverse out is there anyway to add a 6th gear?? >>

Reverse is on the wrong end of the gearset. That would require a complete redesign. Fifth is already overdrive anyway with 4th being almost exactly 1/1.

<< Keep it and unhook it. >>

Now after careful thought I think that would be the better Idea.

I just looked at my reverse switch and it still looks brand new. Hardly ever have used it and after every ride I gently wipe it off with a diaper.

Could be why the facilities 01 Raptor hasn't tossed its gears.

When reverse is engaged, the 4th gear "wheel" slides over and effectively engages reverse. When you shift out of reverse, 4th gear wheel travels back over too the 2nd gear wheel and GRINDS back into proper place. My 4th gear wheel had one dog rounded on the edge and the other 2 looked fine. After the one that was rounded met the yield point, the other 2 quickly followed. Even though mine has forged gears, I will not be using reverse.

garyc660R,

Thanks for that information.

In the 02 and 03 raptor was this problem addressed even with the extra dog attached or is this just an 01 dilemma.

Apparantly this engagement problem has been taken care off with the re-designed 02 Raps (we hear very few failures). I suspect 4 dogs relieves some engagement pressure via more surface contact area + better alignment for the 02 Rap.

garyc660R,

I was out riding this morning on the 380 hour Recon that has never seen a wrench except for oil and air filter needs.

I went and checked all the no trespassing signs, saw 12 turkeys, ate persimmons and then saw two fawns in the persimmon grove mooching off me. I let em go ahead and eat.

Life is good at the facility

Personally, I would still refrain from using reverse. This trans was never truly designed for it!
I completely disconnected mine with the second 01 gear-set and after 200+ hours with the added power of a 686 kit, the gears all looked very good when I changed to the 02 gear-set. IMO, get rid of the reverse mechanisims or just don't use it!

swytak,

Thanks for that compounded info too.

Looks like I won't be using reverse any more. Hardly ever used it anyway.

Anything to keep the black/white 01 going.

Chet

One dog was broke off the 2 gear. I made a mess of a few parts. Raptorrc to the rescue.
