Anyone out there having problems keeping keys in the crank gear on their raptor. I never had a problem until the shop rebuilt my motor(after the tranny exploded in '01) since then Ive replaced the gear, key, washers, and nut several times. Can someone out there that has had their motor apart tell me if this is supposed to be a pressed fit or slip on? Thanks.

Sound like the shop didn't do the repair right after the tranny exploded.... Did you mention to the shop when that happen? Just asking....

Yes, I took it back after about 5-6 months,When it first started vibrating they would not even look at it. They said it if was their fault, it would have happend sooner. Yamaha said they have no control over their dealers, and when I expressed my extreme satisfaction with their product and service they said "Im sorry you feel that way".
Im having a hard time finding out the specs on anything to do with clearances on the gear. I think Im going to have a taper lock arrangement machined into the gear. It beats splitting the cases again to change a crank that may not be broke!

At what RPM does your bike idles?
I have a freind that had the same problem. He was told that it should run fast (800/1000RPM)something to do with close to neutral timing and the engine wants to run backward. Dont know if this makes any sense.

So the flywheel is looseening up? It's behind the nut and washer you speak of. It's a real tight fit....have too have a puller to get it off

Garyc660r,
Not the flywheel side, the clutch side. Its the gear that drives everything from the crankshaft.

Ahhhh I see.
Pick here for the parts diagram Are items #2, 3, and 4 are there and installed correct? Did you add a little loc-tite? Have you checked the primary drive gear and the counterbalancer gear for proper alignment (the gear up and too the left that makes contact)? There is a mark on each gear that line up when installed correct.

Yes, all is correct. Even got really expensive locktite thats supposed to be nuke proof. no dice! The crank must be undersized.Im going to take the the gear to the machine shop to see if they can do some magic wizardry to it. Just wished I could rip into a good one to do some measurements, but it would probably just proove that they did not replace the dammaged crank. The bright side is.... if im going to split the cases, might as well throw in some goodies.

You have probably done this allready but make sure to check the primary drive gear against the clutch gear for any broken teeth and give it a few turns while you have it apart. The broken tranny may have caused problems that were overlooked like a broken or chewed up tooth on the clutch gear.
