Who has widened their Raptors?
#1
Hello all,
I am thinking about buying a new quad and the Raptor is on my list of possibilities.
I have ridden one for a while and if I bought one I would like to widen it.
From looking at the specs on them on the Yamaha site, they look to be about 1" narrower than a 400ex. So with +2 arms and aftermarket rims that are 4"+1", would that yeild a total front width of about 44"? I would want to be at about 45"-47" max...
Also, I would like to lower it a little so it doesn't feel so top heavy and tall. Anyone running no preload shocks? Would those lower it some? Any other suggestions?
I would be using this quad for woods riding and some XC's.....
Thanks, Mike

To begin, why not go with +1 arms, which will get you to your destined width?
The LSR (Lonestar) axle is only +3 wider as well, so that should fit within your parameters too. Most of the Rap riders racing XC that "I" have seen, go +1 arms and +3 axle.
Using ZPS (zero preload shocks) will definitely lower your Rap. I use the Elka's ZPS in a triple rate set-up and it lowered mine atleast 2" if not more. With the addition of extended arms, it will lower it even more. Same goes with the rear. Use a good quality aftermarket shock (ZPS design) or get the stocker rebuilt with Elka components making your stock rear shock an extremely good ZPS shock. I use the rebuilt stocker set-up, it performs great and is only a fraction of the cost of a new ZPS shock. With my +2 swing-arm, I am atleast 3+" lower in the rear.
Other things for XC racing. Skids, both belly and swingarm, new handle bars and some 4-ply tires. These are the necessaties at a minimum.

thanks swytak..
I wanna go as wide as poosible without goign oout of my parameters. We ride some tight trails around here and my 49" wide 250x fits, but some places have a severe pucker factor. Hence the reason I would go down to 45-47".... If the Raptor is 42.5" wide and the EX is 43.5, then the +2's would get me out to the EX +1 which is where I wanna be.
All the extras you listed get put on my rides wether I race them or not!
So are they putting the Rapotrs in the Open XC classes? I haven't been around XC'n for a while.

Hey dude,
I have a '01 Raptor, and it has Lone Star Racing a-arms, but since I didn't put them on, and the guy I bought it from died, I'm not sure what the specs on them are. I'm guessing they are around +2 +1 because it's around 50" wide. I also have Works tripple rates with rezzys, and that lowers the quad some, plus the fact that I have a 2" extended swingarm, and a +2 Durablue axle. It sits lower than the stock Rappy's, and it rides real nice. Hope this helps.

No problem.
With a good set of ZPS front shocks, I think you'll find yourself to be at 45" wide with the stock arms. Also, in the rear, I use a +5 axle and I am currently just a smidge under 50" (W) with 11" wide Holeshot tires.
So are they putting the Rapotrs in the Open XC classes? I haven't been around XC'n for a while.
Yes, with 660cc, well...... it makes sense.
Though I have seen in smaller venues, all 4-strokes race in the same group.

One guyon here said they run Rapotrs in all class, but I find that hard to believe and I haven't been watching closely the last few years so I asked. I imagine Pro-Production and Open would eb the only classes...
Yes, we have those types of races around here. A woodsmen class is what tey call it here. It is supposed to be a class with no limits for peopel who haven't raced before and for people with anyquad(utility and such). Bad thing is they dont monitor who signs up for the class(dont ask what quad) and end up with people who should be in the upper classes with race modded 400's and stuff walking away wit everything. Pretty much pussies who can thang with the right class so they look cool i the woodsmen class.

For now I am still running the stock rims. They hold up better than racing rims when doing cross country riding.
They are slightly heavier, but they make up for being stronger.
I have the stocker Dunlop front tyres, and I run Maxis All-track rear tires.
I will be replacing them all-round with Razrs II soon.
The width is the same back and front which is roughly 48"/49" (remember it is an 01 - 42" stock)
