01 Raptor am I cursed?
#1
Bought my 01 Raptor used and it performs great for me, but I have had some odd problems. Let me know if it's the nature of the bike or what.
Clutchs go out. When I go to change them I find bits & peices of friction plates. Like they liiterally came apart. Fixed that w/ new clutchs
Running some rough river-sand and vibrate 3 sprocket bolts out. The bike ended up warping the sprocket egg shaped.
Developed air leak at the boot from the card to intake

I've owned my Raptor for 2 years exactly this month. I haven't had any of the problems associated with the 01's. The tranny is fine, I've never adjusted the clutch. The carbs did pop out, but that was my fault, I put a jet kit in and messed it up. I'm not running the stock chain, I am, however running the stock sprockets and have had no problems. The reverse works great and I don't have any complaints. I bet I have close to a 150-200 hours on it. I'm a big guy, so the thing is working plenty hard. I have widened and lenghthened it and I love it.

Those problems you mentioned have nothing to do with the fact that it is an 01. It all boils down to the fact that the guy before you did not maintain the bike properly. He probably had no respect for it. They are all repairable problems. So get busy......and have some fun
Im with Bartman, Ive had my Rap exactly 2 years to the month. The only things Iv'e had to replace are things that Iv'e broken, including myself.

Carb boots are not surprising. With the lean condition which wasn't caught until the mid year, there was a few carb boots which have torn. Get the new boots, and jet it properly. Shouldn't have a problem.
The bolts coming loose is wierd. Perhaps the guy who sold it to you had changed sprockets and didn't torque / loctite the bolts properly.
Good opportunity to get a new sprocket and chain. Buy good ones like a DID xring chain and sidewinder sprockets. You won't have to replace them again.
Your clutch is a bit funny. The 01 clutches are kind of middle of the road. Mine is fine, but my buddy needed to do his. They aren't bulletproof. Again, same thing here, spend the money on a barnet or hinson clutch and don't replace it again. Then your bike should be solid.
Change the oil frequently to ensure you get the clutch fibers out of the motor, as the oil for the clutch is the same oil in the bottom end.
As expected, when you buy used, you will have to fix a few things. But if you fix them right, you shouldn't have any further issues......

Our VIN 15400--01 raptor has had none of the problems that is being described we keep a log book on every machine we own and do maintenance as a source of stress relief.
The only thing that we have done different thanks to the insight to other forums members is to not use the reverse on the 01 Raptor.

Thanks for the input, sounds good to me. I bought the bike at a theft recovery auction so ieven though it looked clean it must have been used & abused. Now they start is sounding funny, any ideas on that?

Since you mention that you bought thur the auction, If I were you I go thur the whole thing to make sure every nuts and bolts are tight. Replace what you need.
When warming up the bike before riding, make sure you do it that way it have less chance to have the carb boots come off.
Also does it have aftermarket pipe on it or it is stock pipe on it?
Also like RAPTORYFM660r mention don't use the reverse at all if you can live with out it.
