Default 2001 Raptor need input

i dont have the old warrior any more ... now im looking at a diff quad... i found a 2001 Raptor its stock except for 909 bars and a tether kill switch... i rode it to day and i tell ya it has much much more power then the 350... the guy wants 4800 for it and it looks almost new.. went to the dealer and looked at some used 01s and they wanted like 5200-5600 and they were slightly modded and i thought they were nuts and t hey werent in the best condition either... so my question is.. is there any thing i need to watch out for on the 2001 raptors like any problems people have had on them and is this a deaL for a 01 rappy for 4800? or should i just go to the dealer and get a used one... that has been through the shop? i onlly have around 5600 to spend but dont want to spend that much on a quad.. or should i just go get a diff quad... so are there ne things i should know about the 2001 raptors? and what kind of front/rear tires should i put on after the stockers get worn out? i ride in snow mud hard pack everyting thing but sand...

The main issue with the 01 Raptor is the transmission. Some have problems, some don't. My 01 has not had a problem yet, but I stopped using reverse many moons ago and used it very little before I found out about the second gear problem that is associated with the reverse gear. Several forum members supplied me with this knowledge and maybe saved my transmission. 02 Raptors have updated transmission.

I would think you could get the 01 Raptor cheaper than that and nearer $4000 than the $4800. I would go with the one that appears to be in the best shape. Dealer is way to high.

Like mentioned prior, there are issues with the tranny that has serviced with some owners. I have an 01 Raptor that has never had any problems. It is stock & it still rocks....but since purchasing a GSX-R750, I only use it when it rains and besides...after getting 0-60 in 2.8sec everything else seems very slow. Just my 2cts.......

yes, just listen to the starter and make sure no weird noises......and shift thru all the gears and listen and feel.
some have trans probs, many do not.

look for clues that it's been maintained well.

New bars huh? Possible rollover victom....maybe the plastic is new. Ask how many hours are approximately on the machine. Check the air filter too see if the thing is in reasonable shape.....(this gives an idea of how the machine has been taken care of) is the filter stock? The stock set-up is a joke and lets dust in. One easy indicater of how many hours are on the machine is the available adjustment left for chain adjustment. How many times has the valves been adjusted?
