Yes you can run with the lid off. Go with the foam. I saw a new one on Ebay cheap yesterday. Yamaha makes on also

I prefer the K&N my self but it's a personal choice you'll have to make.
Do not get the GYT-R (Yamaha) kit!!!!
I had 1 & the flanges are too short, I ripped the boot on the filter. The flange on the Pro Design is much longer, It's easier to get the filter clamped on & the aluminum plate fits better IMO. Use a little grease on the O ring & your set.

I am using the Pro-Design foam and the quality, fit, and finish is very nice. Seems to work really well too.

I hear that the foam stops the fine dust better and the K&Ns (with outerwear) are prefered for sand. The foam is much more messy and complicated to clean. K&Ns are super easy to clean.

I'd like to have both and switch based on riding conditions (dust vs. sand) but it sounds like the filters are not "perfectly" interchangable on the pro-design plate.

I think I would prefer the K&N(i have this one) for its' ease of cleaning also.

Moose.....sorry you had problems with your gyrt kit, I have one and haven't had a problem yet, clamps on just fine, and the collars seem to be just as long as needed to fit the K&N filter.....

Either way you go will help it breathe, .

Go with the Pro Design, great product and you get a pre filter that can be used for mud or sand. If you run with out the air-box lid we would recommend running a Outerwear air-box cover. You will have to step up on your jets to run with out the lid.

I had a Pro-design Pro-flow kit on the play banshee with no airbox lid. It was foam and it worked great. I now have a Pro-flo (little company in New England that messes with RD/RZ's) intake and filter kit that clamps on the back of the carbs. It has a single K&N that I have put a water resistant Outerwear. The outerwear is absolutely awesome. I will not let water in even at a car wash. Dust, leaves, bugs, etc that would get into the pleats of an open K&N and cause cleaning problems, are trapped out. I haven't even came close to needing to clean my filter yet. Also, the intake system picked up quite a bit of power over my modded airbox.

14mins, you should try to design a kit similiar to this for the raptor. Heck, If you give me the specs (carb spacing, bell size) I will see if the banshee is the same. I am trying to find a digital camera, and I can take pictures of it if you are interested.
