Default 01 raptor tranny went south for winter

Mine doesnt seem like the typical tranny failure that others have been experiencing, many just lose 2nd and continue to ride then lock up when one of the dogs gets caught in the gears. I had just climbed a good size hill in second and was just cruising along the top when it locked tight (made a few noises that didnt sound too good)

Flashback, to about 2 months ago I was riding and came down from a hillclimb, I downshifted into first and it locked tight as a nats ****, I kicked the tire and moved the shifter a few times and it came unstuck and I rode it the rest of the day. I rode it about 4 times since with no problems or symptoms until now.

So this time I tried kicking it and moving the shifter again to try and get it loose, but nodda. I let it sit while the others played on the hills and was waiting for someone to offer a tow back to the trucks. I started it up and tried to move the shifter (which was stuck and wouldnt budge also) between rocking the raptor and moving the shifter I got it unstuck and was able to shift down and up. When I shift down into first it will kill the motor when the clutch is let out, when shifted up into 2nd I wants to go backwards a little then dies out.

I think I have a seriously bent shift fork agravated by 3 dogs disease.

Does anyone know of a place that sells everything as a kit and might have it instock to convert to '02?

Sorry about your misfortune. Good luck finding your parts. You may as well add a cam and piston while in there. How many hours are on your machine? All 01's that frequently use reverse WILL fail.

I probably have about 125 hours or so on it.. I do use reverse frequently and probably more so since we were riding snow yesterday. I do plan on adding a cam and piston while I am in there.

Does the flywheel have to be pulled from the crank to get into the tranny, my warrior didnt since the crank and bearing come out of the right side case, otherwise I will need that special yamaha puller I guess, does anyone know how much they are?

Mine had about 180 on it when it RUBR'ed. The case has too be split....so the flywheel has too come off for this too happen.

yup, I didnt think snowriding would be that much fun on the rap, and I didnt even take it out last year but it was unstoppable (up until the end anyhow) even on the coal hillclimbs I was doing.

So after a good ride I dont feel as bad about the tranny going, also I was kinda mentally prepared for it with all the talk about them going.

garyc660R,

My Raptor is in the garage stored now till next spring and while I hardly ever used reverse to begin with I stopped completely when you started suggesting not to use reverse last summer. It will be interesting to see how long my transmission holds. Mine is a stock 01 Raptor and is ridden in a manner that Yamaha suggests in there advertising.

I have had over 15 different dirtbikes, street bikes and quads of all the major manufactures and not one transmission failure and then not even in a car, truck since I started driving in 1972.

If Yamaha tells me that its user abuse if my Raptor transmission goes, well that says it all.

Thanks again gary660R and you will be the first to know next summer if my 01 Raptor transmission fails.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. My brother (Washrdskin) bike is as we speak getting the 02 tranny in it and yes piston and cam. We are hoping it will be done by this weekend. Not looking good so far though. His was taken to Alba last Wednesday. They said it will be ready..... but then they all say that.
"3 dogs disease" ha ha..that is to funny. Sorry not really
