Default How to fix the choke spring/cable on 2001 Raptor?

Seems my choke is not returning to the normal run position. I've read some of the other threads on this and understand that water can get in there and mess up the works. Is the new "water tight" cable the answer ? if I remove the nut where the cable enters the carb will that provide all the access I need or do I need to pull the carb out to repair it.

Also, the OEM parts microfisch (SP) does not seem to show the details of how the cable/spring/plunger attaches inside the carb. Can anyone explain this to me ?

Thanks, Eric

Yes take the nut off and the cable and plunger will come out, if your lucky it will just need cleaned up with some wd40 then regreased (lightwight clear grease) and reinstalled. Sometimes the return spring is rotted away, I think you will need a new cable if thats the case.

Thanks 007 ! I pulled it apart and sure enough the spring was totally rusted out and in pieces - basically a blob of sh*t. The little plunger was totally froze up - WD-40ed it and wiggled and it came out.

Next question - If I order the upgraded cable (#5lp-26331-10-00) will it come with the spring ?? If not what is the part # of the spring ?? I still cant seem to find it on the micofisch.

Thanks, Eric

Found the spring - it appears to come with the other parts that attach to the cable.

fisher

the spring does not come with the cable. You'll have to get a whole new plunger I believe to get a new spring. Some have useed other springs found around where ever. I personaly would buy another made for your quad.

I feel the same way -

Does the upgraded cable seem to be keeping the water out ? Seems like a poor design but......

I just raced a 120 mile desert race in Mexico on Sat with the choke about 1/2 engaged - ran pretty rich but I still got 3rd in my class (of 12 other). I hope the nesw cable fixes this !!!

Its suppose to. I bought it for each of my 2001 Raptors a few months ago and so far so good. I was lucky enough that my springs were still intact and very useable. Cleaned em up, wd 40'd em and put em back in. I should check em to make sure they're still in good shape and to see if the cables do what they're suppose to. They're still working properly though. I have no experience with the choke cable issue, but wanted to pass on some info. WD-40 is about the worst thing I can think of to free up a cable or spring. It ATTRACTS moisture. At the time you spray, it displaces moisture, but it starts attracting it immediately afterward. Try it on a portion of metal outdoors and observe over a few days. The portion that got sprayed will rust faster and more heavily than the rest. I found out on locks used outdoors - the only portion really rusted up was the internal parts that I had used WD-40 on.

I use WD-40 for removing gummy residue, tar, etc. I use a silicone based lubricant for quick penetrating stuff. It runs directly into small areas like cables and doesn't attract dirt as much as oil does. Hope this helps.

I would like to remove the handle bar choke cable altogether and go to a choke plunger like on a warrior. I just want to remove the stock handle bar light/kill switch bracket and put on a tether kill.
