Default Could someone explain the operation of the "one way bearing" ?

It's associated with the starter - correct ?
What does it do ?
What are the symptoms of a failing one way bearing ??

Thanks, Eric

This is what ingages te gears that the starter spins. it is only supposed to spin one way. when the bearings wear out it spins all the time, like a grinding noise or clunking.

I think i have the same problem on my Wolvy, Is it normal that i have a noise like clunking only when the engine run at speed, (constant speed). When it accelerate or deccelerate i can't hear this noise. If it's one way bearing problem, does it mean i should hear this clunking when the engine run idle ???
How can i check this bearing quicly ???

Thank Gino !

The one way bearing on the 01 Raptor was weak at best. I think the main reason they went out is everyone thought the Raptor Idled too high so they turned the idle screw down. This caused the motor to stall and kick back grabbing the starter and eating the one way bearing.
You should only hear it grinding and klunking when you go to start the motor. Or it will just spinn.

When the one way went out in my warrior(same as wolverine one way) it would make a clunk clunk clunk noise when I started it, and would make another clunk when I shut it off. This clunking came from the lower part of the motor, and while the engine was running it didn't make any noticable noise. Also when my one way started getting real bad i noticed that it was harder for the starter to turn over the motor(to the point that my starter needed rebuilt) and I had metal shavings in my oil filter from the one way coming apart. It sounds like you have some other problem. Can you tell where the noise is coming from? (top end, bottom end?)

hello Greg, i checked my engine noise this morning, and the noise seems to coming from top end. But it's like if something is loose when the engine dont need torque. If i give gas no noise but if i keep constant speed or just decelerate i little bit the noise is coming !! if i do that on neutral gear no noise !. It seems like only when the engine run idle at constant speed !!! did you hear something like this before ??? thanx !!!

If it's up in the top end it's not the one way, that's in the bottom end towards the front. If I remember correctly my recon had top end noise (a tapping sound) and I think it only happened when the engine was at a steady speed like yours. The noise was piston slap, because the motor was in desperate need of a rebuild. If it's in the top end of the motor the best thing to do is take it to a shop, or have someone with experience take a look at it. It's hard to diagnose problems like these without being able to actually hear the sound. It could be a loose cam chain, it might need valves adjusted, or it might need a rebuild.

Thank you Greg, do you know what sould be the engine compression, it could be a first check, because actually my wolvy have no torque when the engine run at slow rpm, the torque is only at high rpm is it normal on that kind of motor??? I cant run at full rpm on gear 5, not enough power ?? probably my engine need a rebuilt !!!

warriors have the same engine, and mine pulls hard from idle all the way to top end. That sounds a lot like you need a rebuild. I'm not sure about the compression, but since it's the same motor, you could look at a warrior service manual to figure it out. There's 318 pages so i don't really feel like looking through it, but here's one I uploaded to my server if you want to download it yourself and check it out.warriormanual.pdf
