Default Raptor Performance - - Help!

Sorry about that, my friend has a 2001 Raptor. It has a K&N Filter and outerware, T-4 Pro Circuit Slip On, 12 tooth sprocket, and the needle clips are set one notch up. The problem is, we don't think it is performing up to par. Not sure what the problem is, so we are asking all for some help. We ride in Wisconsin, and the last two times we all went riding (last weekend) it was about 10-15 above zero without a wind chill. It just doesn't seem like it's running right. Also, it wouldn't start, but after pull starting it, it ran again. Seemed like it was "choked out". We ran some drag races, with me on my new Predator (not broken in yet so I never went over 3/4 or so throttle) and I walked away from him every time. That I know shouldn't have happened, I don't have THAT big of a head! Any help would be appriciated. Thanks in advanced!!!!

Check the choke plunger in the carb.
On the 01 Raptors water could get in to the choke & rust the spring & plunger.
it gets in there from riding in the wet & just from washing it.
They upgraded the Raptor cable & plunger in 02.

It could be the jetting also since he has a pipe.
Are the restrictors still in the snorkle?
If so cut them out & rejet, He'll see a big improvement in power.

I haven't looked to see if the choke was stuck or anything, but when he shut it off, it wouldn't start. As he was cranking it over, as soon as he let off the starter, it would sort of fire. After pull starting it, it ran again. That's what made me think it might be the choke, and I read about the problems others have had with it. After opening the snorkle, what jets do you recommend? It only has the slip on, not the full hedder pipe. Also, should he put the needles back to origional? Thanks again for all the help. I don't know if you went up against a Predator yet, but if I was going to beat him in a drag, it sure shouldn't have been as bad as I did. He is also running a 12 tooth front instead of the 13, but I would have thought he would take me better with that. I had it from start to finish. I know all the hype about the Predator, but still, I have doubts that it would take it like I did. Thanks again Moose. And also, just to thank you for your web site, the suspension stuff we are both going to use to set ours up. Have you inverted the front shocks on yours? He did on his and says that there was a big inprovement.

Default Raptor Performance - - Help!

I'm using Dynojets so my jet numbers wouldn't be the same as stock. But for Dynojets under 3000' it's needle 4th groove from top, stock pilots, air corrections 3 turns out, DJ144/ DJ146.
I'm sure a search will provide the stock jet sizes.

I just put Elkas on my Raptor, I never tried inverting the stockers.
Glad ya liked my web site.
I'm going to be adding a bunch of new stuff as soon as I get time.

Check the choke cable for sure. Un screw it from the carb and pull it out. Also you say needle clips one notch up. Stock they are in the middle groove, 3 down from top, there are 5 grooves all together. So did you move the clip up to the second groove from top? If so you leaned it out a tad. Also with temps going lower like the 10-15 degrees you speak of it will run leaner. With slip on he should have jetted up one size IMO. That would make it 145 left carb 150 right. This K&N you speak of, is it stock style mounting? Requires lid on? Have him jet up at least to the 145/150 and remove the snorkle all together. Get a K&N filter for the crank case breather and he'll be happier.. If its a pro design filter with flange, remove the lid all together and jet up to 150/155 and he'll be even happier. Fuel screws 3 turns out each carb.

Whens the last time he checked the valves? If they are tight it would have a hard time starting.

Your choke cable is probably corroded. Might be time to buy the 02 version.

I was going to mention the valves too, It sounds like that could be the problem. What fuel does he run? If its too high an octain the cold air and lack of comp. will make it very hard to fire, This would be even worse with the valves tight ! I would bet money on the valves, but he sounds a little lean still too. Hope this helps.
