Default video compression for website

Hey guys. I know some of you do movies and I want to know how to compress them. I have a Sony Trv608 cam which has a MPEG capture feature on the comp. via streaming video. The videos come out as a Mpeg layer 1 and 2, and are like 5 mb for 14 seconds. They are even that good of quality either. So I am just wondering where I get a good video comp. prog?

Does your video camera have an attatchment to connect to a VCR? As in RCA type plugs? If so, Go to CompUSA or similar and buy a litle item called Pinaccle Linx. If you have an open USB port that is, if not you can buy a video capture card and do the same thing. It will come with the software program needed to capture the videos and spruce them up how you'd like and save them in a few different file formats that include AVI, MPEG and WMV. WMV is the one you'll want to use for smaller file sizes.

Virtual Dub, you can get it on CNET maybe still, or search for it on yahoo. It will let you make it into any AVI format you have the codev for on your computer. If you cant find it at all ill send it to you.

Will not do WMV or ASF though because they have copyrights and microsoft said they dont want anyone touching them. Guess you have to buy something pay to make those. DIVX is usually plenty enough compresssion though. And make the sound to MP3 or something in the same program.

Heres there website. They have other products to look at to. This is the one I was talking about.

Pinacle Linx $69.00

Dubbing to AVI files is ok. They are large files also. The pinacle program actualy captures the video from your camera in the AVI format. Then you cut the videos to youre liking, add music, titles whatever, then save it in the file format you desire. You can also hook it up to your VCR and record it to a VCR tape. Good for home movies.

Well, there are about a million answers to this question.

First, if your camera has firewire (Sony calls it something else) then use that by all means.

Second, if the camera has an MPEG output you can use that then re-encode to a lower rate but that may no tbe the best option. The MPEG option I think is for people who just want to have it sort of web ready to send videos.

Third, if you have no fiorewire seconf best option is what wshrdskin said - get a video captuire device.

WMV is what I use as the codec. It'svery common and does a decent job compression the video. All of my videos are at 300 to 500 kbps on my site. You can get a stand alone encoder or use TMPenc which is very good. When you get to the video encoders and formats and editing software there are a lot of choices - too many to cover here.
