Launching the Wicked 660R
#1
OK guys/gals I would like suggestions on launching my Raptor. Currently it is in stock form and I would like to harness the power it has and learn better driving skills before upping the power. Personally I feel it to be a waste of my time to upgrade if I cannot even harness what I already have.
Here I go on a launch.
Drop it in first and bring up the R's and dump the clutch. First time I nearly landed on the dirt behind me. Next I tried to shift weight forward hoping to hold down the front end but had to basically lie across the front to keep it down. Well when I finally got that down then the problem of transitioning back to the seating position to shift. I nearly went of the bike backwards again, "wow much torque.” Needless to say I now launch easily and must feather the throttle all the way through first reaching WOT right before I shift to second. This puts me at a severe disadvantage against the smaller CC bikes due to the fact they can launch with more throttle off the line. I rode one of these smaller bikes and believe me there was a difference, I was at full throttle way much quicker.
We all know drags are won by the hole shot so any help will be appreciated.
Oh yea I am not on sand mostly dirt roads with stock tires.

Pretty much what Barlet said. Or try to launch in second use the clutch to keep you from flipping. On a dirt road, if its loose dirt, you should be able to rev her up pretty good in second and dump the clutch. Just hope you don't get enough traction to stand it up, because theres not much saving it then.

stock tires hook up hard. i like the razr tires. you get a lil wheel spin and hook.i rev her up high enough to spin the rears when i and dump the clutch. but what do i know, i'm not a "drag racer". 14 min. is the guy that would know...

I have tried leaving in first but no luck. Second gear and feather the clutch.
Longer swing arm is another option, better for your tranny.

Pfft, ride the wheelie out best you can, looks cool, it is fun, and you gain respect for the quad (after you eat it a few times) Youll learn to drag it better by trial and error anyways

i have perfected the launch on my piped raptor... I probably have a weight advantage on this aswell, 140lbs. I have 18x10x8 razor mx's and 19x6x10 holeshots up front, 14 tooth countershaft sprocket. This setup with the tires and higher gear sprocket combo puts me right back where stock is. I hold the clutch in and just barely give it gas, then when i see yellow i push the throttle in about half to 3/4 the way in and drop the clutch on green. Happens really fast, I do this in second gear. I find useing 1st gear is just a waist of time. I get lots of wheel spin + accelleration and the front end never comes up more than 1/2 foot. I get the whole shot over my brothers banshee everytime.... now thats somethin to be proud of.
I've always wonderd how much wheel spin is too much.... Some wheel spin is good in the sense it will get your rpms up and keep the front end down. Take this for example. The sparks kid on the sparks raptor... Very lil weight... Line him up against a fat man on a stock raptor... Put them on sand with stock tires... Who will get the whole shot ? My bets on the fat man.
