HotCam stage 2 with 11:1 JE
#1
I can't freakin' decide. I have spoken to everyone and am still confused.
I don't want to run the 12:1 b/c race gas would be a pain.
How would an 11:1 102mm (686) piston with a stage 2 cam and springs work out? I have been told that the stage 2 really needs the 12:1 piston to be effective, but also HotCam (Tony) said that the 2 would be better than the one with the 686, regardless of 11:1 or 12:1.
I mainly trail ride and drag probably 10% of the time but I want to do this once and do it right.
I know if I go stage 2 I should get the springs but if I go stage 1 should I get them as cheap insurance anyway?
I ordered the 11:1 102mm and stage 1 today but it ain't too late to change that to stage two and add valve springs.
Opinions, comments, anything!
Thanks.

You gotta spend more money than 150 for a piston and 130 for a cam to do it right in my opinion.

Do you have to go with the 102mm? If I were just doing the 11:1 and no headwork I would go with the Stage 1 and stock bore JE piston. If you have to have the 686 I would go with the Stage 2. Hope this helps a little!! XR

Damn that was fast!
Thanks guys. 14, you are the man. I just needed a little confirmation. This is the last time I'll ask, promise! Now I can sleep.
As soon as I pull the head, its going off to Craycraft to get ported as well. I've already got a slot in the line up. Now I just need to find time to go to the garage and do the dirty work. . . .
You guys are a great help and keep me sane.

Xstream,
Why only go with the stock bore with 11:1? Seems like there is more torque to be had simply by hogging it out a little.
I do plan to get head work done as well, by Craycraft next week.

Slappie- I am doing the same combo as you on my 2001 except i am staying stock bore. The only reason i am staying stock bore is....................... When i out run some of the bigger shops on my little 660 pump gas craycraft.LOL

slappie- Believe me when I tell you that the stock bore 11:1 and Stage 1 were torquey enough!!! But since you're having the head ported and polished you will definitely have a beast on your hands!!!!!!!! Congratulations and have fun with your "new" machine!!! XR
