Warning!!!! 2003 Yamaha Kodiaks defective.
The servo motors shipped on the 2003 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4's are defective. These are the electric motors that shift the Kodiak in and out of 4wd.
Yamaha customer service, as well as my dealership, has admitted to me today via the telephone that they are aware that there is problem with the servo motors coming from the factory and they don't know yet what they are going to do to fix the problem. They could not even gaurantee me that the problem would be fixed at all. I have had my Kodiak back to the dealer four times now, without making any progress in getting the problem fixed. Yamaha is just now starting to get calls from other owners trickling in to them on this issue.
What happens is after riding the Kodiak for approximately 50-100 miles continously in 4wd the servo motor will blow out the 3 amp fuse. You will know this because the 4wd light will go out. The motor then requires you pop a 5 amp fuse in to get it to work again. How long it will work with the 5 amp fuse I have no idea nor does Yamaha. When the motor is pulled apart it is all burned and black inside.
The only thing Yahama will do for me is warranty the motor for a few months after my factory warranty runs out. Even though Yamaha know's the motors are coming from the factory with this problem. Customer service told me that even if I kept having this ongoing problem after the first few months I am out of luck. Needless to say I am contacting an attorney.
My dealer has also complained to Yamaha, it is definately not good business for them. They were pretty steamed about the situation.
I would advise anyone who owns this four wheeler to put it in 4wd and leave it there while it is still under warranty. After this experience with Yamaha, I will be hard pressed to buy anything from them again. They do not stand behind there product, and I believe are running a shady operation.

I AM ALREADY STARTING TO HAVE THE PROBLEM. I'VE HAD THE BIKE FOR 2 MONTHS AND I BROUGHT THE THING IN FOR ONE SERVO ALREADY. NOW I HAVE THE MACHINE BACK AND I HEAR THE SERVO MOVING AND THE 4WD LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF BUT SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T SEEM TO REALLY COME OUT OF 4WD.

great, I just got a 2003 Kodiak 400 and I have about 300kms on it. So far so good on the servo, and I'm constantly switching it back and forth. Hopefully mine isn't a lemon in this issue, although I've noticed some "play" in the handlebars, that's annoying!

Wow. I'm sorry to here about the servo problem. I wonder if the 450's use the same servo? The servo problem never seemed to be as bad on the 02's. I hope that Yamaha gets there sh!!t together and recall all 03's (once a reliable servo is created).
Hey snappynuts the play in the steering is likely only the nut at the bottom of the steering shaft. There have been post on the subject before. Just do a search and you should get some instruction.
Good luck all 03 owners. :-)
