I was wanting your guys opinion on if i should buy a 2001 raptor that is on ebay. It looks really nice and has lots of extras such as new suspension and it is race ready. But the only thing that worries me is the transmission problems associated with the 2001. In the details it says that he has replaced 2cnd and 3rd gear with the ones from the 2003, so do you think this will stop the transmission from breaking?

 

DO IT!!!!!!....if it has new gears and they where done right..u should be good to go!!!

One more thing, i have heard that using reverse on the 2001 will cause the tranny to break, so with a new second and third gear will i be able to use reverse.

 

I would ask them about just 2-3rd being replaced with 2002.

ya for the proper replacement to work you have to replace like 9 out of 12 gears in there. They changed the doglegs on the gears from 3 to 4, so you cant combine them, sounds like they put 2001 gears back in it. JMO

Sounds like the seller is trying to pull a fast one by saying it has been "fixed". Chances are it just hasnt broken yet and saying it is fixed might help unload it. You'll never know till ya split the cases and see it first hand. If he replaced 01 parts with 01 parts it's not an improvement.

Unless it's a killer deal, I'd be skeptical. or - plan on factoring in $600-$800 in parts and your labor to do a full 02 conversion. Been there - doing that !

The guy is lying about the gears so what else is he lying about?

Knock the price down some more and fix the problems yourself.

I'm sure glad I'm not selling an 01
