Default lean or rich?

Did a plug test today. Held it at wide open throttle in third and hit the kill and clutch at the same time just like others had posted. The (new) plug showed black at the base where the threads start with the porcelin still white and the electrode sort of grayish. I was thinking rich but is this even a proper test? ( I have read other posts on the subject with mixed opinions)

aside from the plug, how does it run?
how did the base ring look?
a new plug is hard to read. ride it around for a while and then do a plug check. or use your old plug.

I think he means the colored ring around the base of the porcelin. There should be some coloring there at the base.
You may need a flashlight to see it.
