Default Raptor Axle Nut - Help

The last thing you want to do is strip the thread on either your axle or your lock nuts.
Ok, this is the boat I am riding this week. I have all ready stripped mine. I am going to take it down to a machine shop this week to see if it can be fixed.

Ooach!!! Thats gotta hurt.

Was it the stock axel?
If so rather spend the money on an aftermarket axel.

Default Raptor Axle Nut - Help

Yes it was, matter of fact I was going by the manual and it didnt tell me that there were any allen screws in it but I did take one out and started to crank away when I finally cracked it loose it got tight again and thats when I saw the SECOND allen screw so by that time it mess up the outer two threads and pulled the nut off with ease, then the second nut was stopped by the outer threads so with out making it more screwed up I just cut the nut off with a grinder. All because someone ran into the rear of my bike and broke the brake stay. This sucks!!

jpoggi660r,

Is that a 2001 Raptor axle? IF so, it isn't the same as a 2002 or 2003. You can get an updated GYTR lock nut just for the 2001 axle. I upgraded to the 2002 axle and axle nuts. Still had to tighten them up about 4 times before the brake rotor stayed totally tight.

Use lock-tight works great.

You should be able to get a Crows Foot to attach to a torque wrench.

Default Raptor Axle Nut - Help

How much loctite should I be using?

Does anyone understand or follow the procedure in the Service Manual for tighting the axle?

The main thing I don't understand is how the manual states to torque the inner nut to a specifc amount, then the outer. Draw a line across the two and then apply additional torque to the inner nut.

This to me would cause the torque on the outer nut to change and be loose.

Please Advise,

Jason

The idea is that you tighten the nuts to speck. Then torque the inner nut slightly more. This releases the pressure from the outer nut. In the event that you have overtightened the inner nut. It can move but only so much. Just a precaution from over tightening.

At least thats my take on it anyway.

Default Raptor Axle Nut - Help

This is an old post, but I just wanted to respond to it because there was quite a bit of wrong info posted.

If you tighten the inner nut too much, it will put major lateral stress on the bearings. This is bad. Sealed bearings do not handle side stress too well (tapered bearing are much better for this). It will cause premature bearing failure.

First you tighten the inner nut to 40 ft.lb. Then you hold the inner nut from moving and tighten the outer nut to 140 ft.lb. Then you hold the outer nut from moving and tighten the inner nut BACKWARDS to 170 ft.lb. This in essence takes the pressure off of the bearings and "locks" the two big nuts together.

Also use plenty of blue loctite on the threads of the nuts and the setscrews.

Hope this helps,

RR1
