Default Need help you Raptor mechanics.

Briefly:
* I live at 5000 feet
* Bought '02 Raptor in 1/02, had shop change jets from 140/145 to 135/140
* Runs awesome, no problems
* Recently added K&N air filter with White Bros. E-series pipe
* Runs like scalded dog, still no problems
However, when I changed my plug the other day (what a pain in the ***, had to get my 4 year old daughter {tiny fingers} to get that plug out of that well) I noticed that it was pretty cooked.
Assumption: I need to move that clip down one notch on the main to get more fuel in. What is the best way to get at that sucker? Mind you, I can build you a 500+ hp dragster engine, but all I've ever done on that Raptor is regular maintainance. Would one of you be kind enough to break it down for me on what to do. (tank removal? just pull carb off?)

My most sincere thanks in advance

I'm guessing that you didn't rejet after adding the K&N & pipe.
You are now most likely too lean.
You increased the airflow with out increasing the fuel. you need to jet up.
I can't help with jet sizes since I run Dynojets & the sizes are diffrent.
Reading plugs is very difficult with pump gas since there is additives that wash the plug making it look lean.
Have you removed the restrictors from the snorkle?? it'll increase air flow & you can jet for the pipe & airbox mods at the same time.

Just how long was that plug in there??
Motion pro makes a spark plug wrench rthat grabs the plug so you don't have to intrupt your daughters nap next time!! LOL

To change the jets you need to remove,
1. seat
2. headlights
3. front plastics
4. Fuel tank
5. airbox
6. rubber cover over carbs
7. fuel line

Yea it sounds like a lot of work but it's not really bad.
the first time it took me almost 2 hours but now I can do it in about 45 mins.

Thanks for the help fellas.

The plug was indeed slightly lighter that tan, but not scorched white. I'll think I'll take your advice, bump up a jet size on both, AND drop the clip one spot. We'll see what happens.

Next time take and unscrew the plug and after that just push the plug wire back on it and lift it out.

I would leave the needle where it's at unless your having hesitation or bogging problems and just change the mains. Have you modded the air box lid any? Knowing that would help to determine what jets to put in.

Get a dedicated plug socket.....it grips the plug and you will have no troubles getting it out.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The patrons on this site are one pretty good bunch of guys! Throw out a question or problem, you've got a workable answer comin' back at ya. Thanks again.

I haven't made any air box mods, but was thinking about clearing the "throat" or "tunnel" restrictors out. Will try leaving the clip alone, and just bumping up a jet size. We'll see what happens.

I have aftermarket exhuast, k&n and a 12t sprocket and k&n jet kit. It bogs down a little bit. Does that mean that I need to move the clips on the pin?

fsu if you trim the flaps from the snokle I would say 145/150 on the jets. 2 1/4 L 2 1/2 R turns out on your mix. screws.

1. Headlights do not have to come off, just man handle the front fender around the headlights.
2. Under you seat is a tool kit, use the spark plug socket that Yamaha supplied you.
