Am I an idiot to get a 01 raptor??

Hey,
I'm looking at a used 2001 Raptor. He's asking a decent price and it has a Yamaha extended warranty good until May 2005. I've heard many things about the 2001 and the raptor in general.
What would I be getting myself into??

The Yamaha extended warranty isnt even good enough to wipe my *** with.
Dont even try your luck with the 2001, get a 02 or newer. Even then you will still have other problems, but at least your tranny wont blow up (hopefully).

Well, I'm sure you'll get several responses about not getting one from disgruntled '01 owners with tranny problems. I have an '01 model and haven't had any problems yet (knocking on wood). The carb boots have never come off, no one way starter problems or any of the other problems that I have heard on these forums. I find it incredible because I consider myself to be one of the un-luckiest people on Earth!

If its clean, and in great shape, and you can get it for $3000 or less it's a definate go. You can upgrade the tranny yourself for $5-$700.00. If its in great shape and he wants $3500 or more then the decision is much harder. If he's already had the tranny upgraded to 2002 gear sets and can show proof, the quad is in great shape and he wants $4000 or less its a go, imo.

Jumping in here, I have a 01 Raptor. The only problem I have had with it was the starter clutch. I have heard the 01 has problems in this area as well, not being to mechanically technical I am not sure if that is related to the tranny problem.
Anyway if you get a good deal on it I would say go for it.

Yes, but, some dealers will say it was rider abuse and Yamaha won't cover it, or they'll cover parts and you pay labor etc. They also will just replace with 01 gears again, not 02's

I wouldn't buy it unless you are prepared to replace tranny somewhere down the road.Mine went south while trail riding(slow trails),ended up costing me close to $1100.00.Had to replace rod and piston also, broken pieces from 2nd gear caused extra damage.I would buy 02 or newer.Yamaha will NOT help you out on cost.
