Default Locking differential...Please explain.

Hello. I am trying to decide between the Kodiak 400 4x4 and the 450 4x4. The 450 has the locking differential, but the 400 does not. Please explain to me how the locking differential works and how a 4x4 with one works different then one without.

Thank you so much!

Well, the 400 has no low range, and the locker means when locked all 4 wheels spin instead of three when unlocked it only spins three for easy turning... The 400 will only have the 3 wheel drive instead of all 4. The 450 you can choose. Aftermarket lockers are available for the 400.

Hope this helps.

So, is this "3 wheel drive" worth the $700 over the regular 2wd? Or will it not make enough difference to even mess with it?

Thanks for your help.

yes it is worth the xtra 700. it is "3 wheel drive" when one wheel is in the air and 1 on the ground, the one in the air tends to spin while the 1 on the ground gets little or any power. the locking diff eliminates that and all wheels spin no matter what. locking diff. provides "true" 4 wheel drive, with just a limited slip well its a limited slip, not a 3 wheel drive, it will slip for a while but then it will stop usually (unlike a regular diff)
