Default Fire retardant material?

I've seen the suggestion to either carry some kind of fire extinguisher or a fire retardant material on trail rides. I doubt I'll be taking on the weight of even a small fire extinguisher, but I'd still like to have some way to put out a fire. What would be a good 'fire extinguishing material' I could bring along that would work say if a fire started in a hard to reach part of the motor that I could just maybe grab a hand full of and throw it on? I'm imagining it would be something granular like sawdust (but of course not sawdust).

Thanks

Sand comes to mind but it's pretty heavy. I thought maybe someone made an extinguisher that uses those CO2 cartridges like they use in BB guns but I couldn't find any. This is something you might look at:

Water works on most fires and you can also put it in your radiator or drink it. I've had to add water from my cooler to my radiator in the past. Too bad it's heavier than a fire extinguisher.

Halon comes to mind, but I think you'll run into a lot of trouble explaining how you got it.

Wouldn't suggest standing around afterwards either if it's not very windy.

The only camp spots I chose are on the shore of a lake/river or creek so water should be near by, just bring a collapsible bucket along.
Never heard of a ATV catching fire while just riding down the trail.
