I've removed all the rear lines and cleaned them. It's the lower reservoir this should be filling from correct? The one on the handle bar is for front brakes only?

Yes the small reservoir is just for the rear master cylinder. The foot brake line has it's own cavity in the rear caliper for emergency stopping or as an assist to the main braking system. Again I think Polaris went backwards when they got rid of the mechanical rear brake in favor of the small hydraulic system that just doesn't apply that much pressure to the caliper piston.

I think perhaps part of my issue is the master cylinder isn't bled properly itself. I see a little bleed screw on it so I may try that first and work my way back to the rear once I get my mityvac

Hello again. I'll revive this old thread of mine. I'm looking at purchasing a 2004 ATP that has some rear end issues. Locking up and grinding were the issues described bt the seller.

Assuming this is a tear down and rebuild, any idea what a parts cost or labour would be for such a venture?

Jack the wheels up off the ground and while in neutral slowly turn the rear tires. Look at the prop shaft(#15) to see if it turns evenly with the tires or grinds or slips a little. This was one of the most common problems on the Magnums and Atp models. The prop shaft coupler that a lot of people didn't even know was there has a grease zerk that people couldn't see unless they had the prop shaft turned a certain way and then could only reach it through the hole in the box frame. If you eliminate it as the cause, could be a problem in the rear diff itself.

Yes, thanks. That issue was already eliminated as the PO replaced the prop shaft and joint. Its internal so I think I'm going to pass on the purchase. Too costly to repair and nothing in the used parts market in my area.

A new complete rear diff is Nla also and would be expensive if it was.You can try to repair one,but that in itself could be super expensive if more than just a couple bearings were the problem such as the ring and pinion gears also.

yes, what concerns me is the grinding and locking up. That sounds like the crunching of gears to me and the bigger dollar items.

A howl or a noise I'd be more likely to suspect bearings.

Either way, I think I'll avoid the risk of this buy.
