Default 2001 polaris trailblazer 250 tuneup

So here is my dilemma I have both a 1996 Polaris trailblazer 250 and a 2001 trailblazer 250.
The 01 runs decent but seams to not clean out/run real smooth compared to the 96 until i get to 1/2 throttle and up. The 01 does start up right away with almost no choke when cold. i m thinking a couple of things it needs. a carb tune up with new parts, a new coil? or maybe its a hair low on compression.
the 96 is kinda in much overall rougher shape except for the engine seams like it runs almost perfect with no roughness revving in the lower rpms compared to the 01.
Now the throttle sticks a little on the 96 after its been in the farm shop for like 5-6 months. LOL but otherwise engine runs good.

so with all those things said where could i start with the 01 to get it running smoother going off idle up to mid range so It Runs Smooth Like My 96? I might have other questions but want to get the 01 up to snuff first.
Are some of these machines sometimes known to be jetted on the rich side to begin with?

Always start at the basics. Check compression. Sitting for 5 monts and the carb may need to be removed, cleaned and I'd install a carb kit. Plenty of these on ebay. If it has spark,it doesn't need a coil..

well when i checked the compression the 01 had similar compression as my 96. it hasnt been sitting for a couple months as the 96 has in the shop. even though my cheap harborfreight compression tester read around 70-75 pounds it reads the same on our air line with faulty fitting on it that leaks air out the end so they both have at least 90-100 psi. going to get a carb kit on ebay.

I got interesting results when i used my cheap harbor freight engine compression tester. got about 70 ish psi on my 01 and closer to 75 on the 96. I knew the tester was already not accurate because i kinda rigged it on our shop air line a while back and just the other day that i know has at least 90-125 psi in it. and it read 75 psi on that shop line .so i think both my atvs compression should be average at least 100 psi or so.

Minimum compression should be 100. Below that, even if it cranks and runs,it won't last long. Best to catch one before the piston breaks and does more damage. A good over sized Wiseco forged piston is the best way to go.

i might take the fenders off and fuel tank to more easily check the compression with my tester and maybe another one. my tester is off like 30-45 psi. anybody else here besides old polaris tech with an opinion?
