Unhappy Oil Filter Came Loose! My day is ruined!

Hi all,

so i purchased an oil filter from Royal Distributing in Ontario, Canada. Black aftermarket filter, just has the royal distrib part # on it. They cannot confirm the manufacturer when i asked.

This was last summer that i did this oil change. Been riding maybe 15-20 times since the oil change with no issues. Then this weekend i was driving the atv on a trail, wide open throttle when all of a sudden i lost power slowly. So i pulled over and shut the atv off, ive had issues with my belt before but this felt different, I walked around the atv to find that i was leaking oil, i pulled off the covers and i see my oil filter OFF! and rattling around in the frame!

I checked the oil level, and needless to say it had pumped the engine dry of oil. I did not start it again and i went straight to the store to buy oil. luckly my friend was with me. I filled it with oil, threaded this POS oil filter back on and attempted to start it (had to get home) it started but now sounds loud and like its knocking or ticking or sometime. i dont remember it being this loud. I drove it back at first slowly, i gave it a little bit more and at first i could only get about 35-40 km out of it, then after 5 min of light throttle i started playing with it again, seemed to be back to normal (power wise) its just knocking now, which doesnt sound good

Im guessing i now need an engine rebuild?!? due to a 5$ filter... fml

Did the filter have a rubber seal for it to tighten against? I don't understand why you are blaming the filter for coming off...seems like if it was going to untwist and come off, it would do that whether it was a 5 dollar filter or a twenty dollar filter! If it isn't tight enough to start with it is going to come off!
Anyway, if you ran the motor out of oil to the point that it started to shut down, I would say you are going to need a rebuild. As far as cost, I guess that you would have to wait and see whether the cylinder walls are still good and see what else needs to be replaced...and whether you are doing the work or a shop is!! I would get it in and get it worked on....these things don't typically fix themselves!

Was it turned on tight? My 350 and 500 used the same filter as yours and I just use cheap Wal mart and Canadian tire moto master filters.
Was it turned on tight enough?
The oil light never came on well in advance.
All these filters work on your ATV.

I made sure it was tight, like i said, i did the oil change a year ago, if it wasn't tight enough, it would have came off before the 15-20th ride, i am also very experienced with mechanics, so I doubt it was human error

no oil light before it happened

from what i can figure, it was a hot day, 37 degrees out, i was wide open throttle, im guessing the oil filter expanded slightly (due to the extreme heat) and combined with high oil pressure (high revs) this pushed or popped the filter off the threads.

The oil must have pumped out of the engine within a few seconds. It must have been only 30 seconds without oil before it started to die

Also, the engine currently still runs, there is NO smoke, power is still there. It is just noisier than before, knocking sound. Im guessing crank bearings, but if theres no smoke, i doubt the cylinder walls/piston or head are damaged.

what u guys think?
