Ask The Editors: Titanium Hardware Upgrade

They’re pretty and expensive but are they worth making the switch?
We’re going to have to assume you are talking about a fender bolt kit as going for the really big stuff in titanium is very, very expensive but of course, that’s where the biggest strength is gained and weight shaved. For example, a titanium swingarm pivot bolt alone can cost nearly $500. Same for an engine bolt set like this one:

For a handful of plastic mounting bolts, we’d probably just stick to OEM. Why? While titanium is stronger and lighter, the differences you are going to gain here will be absolutely minimal. As in just skip that burger before your moto that morning and you’re going to way more than make up for the difference.
Not only that but your friends are right – titanium can corrode and seize very quickly when mated to aluminum and should you end up stripping or breaking the bolt because of this, drilling out that rock hard titanium is going to be tricky.
Were it us, we would save a few bucks and go for aluminum.
