Dear ATVC: I’m thinking about upgrading my Kawasaki Bayou 220 to a bigger ATV this summer. I bought it for a good price and definitely got my use out of it. It never let me down but I want something a bit faster and 4×4.

I was looking at the Kawasaki Prairie 400, 360 and 300. They are about $1500-1800 for one in good shape. I also looked at Honda but they are too pricey for the year I want (2000 and up). Which ATV should I buy? Thanks! Ross.B

It may seem like generic advice but we have to default to our usual wisdom when it comes to the concept of purchasing a new (or new to you) ATV. Stick with what’s worked for you. If your Kawasaki has been good to you, there are affordable used examples in your area and you have access to a dealership for parts and repairs, by all means, all of the Prairies you are considering have great reputations. Of course if you’re looking for a noticeable bump in speed and power, the 400 would be the smartest option.

Note that there has been a voluntary recall on certain models: 4-wheel drive Prairie ATV 1997-1999 models are included in this recall: KVF 300-A1, KVF 400-A1, KVF 400-A2/L, KVF 400- C1. “Kawasaki Prairie” is written on both sides of the ATVs, and “4X4” is printed on the rear of the seat. Kawasaki dealers nationwide sold these ATVs from September 1996 through August 2000. The dealership would have replaced the CVT belt as the stocker could lock the transmission in rare circumstances. Be sure to check if the repair has been performed should you check out any of the models mentioned.

Never buy sight unseen and use the following tips with whatever make and model ATV you consider:
