Video: 1971 Sears Lawnmower Turned ATV
They say if you want something bad enough… Case in point? Check out the Baja Sears; a custom built off-roader based on a 1971 Sears Suburban Lawn Tractor.
Do you shift this contraption, we wondered. The answer is yes! It boasts a 3-speed transmission with high and low range for a total of 6-forward gears (and reverse of course).
We were curious what else this crafty backyard engineer had developed to make this machine possible and here’s the list:
-11hp Briggs flat-head
-Shocks added to the front axle to keep things stable and to look cool
-Seat mounted with a spring
-Engine mounts welded on, new holes drilled
-Bumpers and nerf bars/rub rails
-Hydraulic brakes, brake pedal
-Lock trans-axle
-Beefed up steering
-Skid plates for trans-axle, steering rods, front end
-Headlights and tail lights
-ATV tires in rear, 8” trailer tires in front
-Exhaust system
-Throttle pedal, bypass/remove governor
-Clutch to work with the new engine which is 3-4″ rear of the original location
-Paint
-Horn
-Gas tank
-Battery bracket
-Wiring
About the only thing it does not do is cut the grass.
Here’s where things get really weird, there’s actually a global community for this type of thing known as All-Terrain Lawn Tractors (ATLTs). Here’s the link to the forum dedicated to these guys and particularly this build:
