Ask The Editors: Certifying my Child Rider for the Trails

Dear ATVC:I am brand new to ATVs so please excuse me if this is a dumb question. My son and I have spent the last few months finding used 4-wheelers to start riding at a national forest near us. We finally got everything we needed, including two ATVs and a trailer to get there.

When we got there this morning we were told that since my son was only 8 years old he needed a certification to ride in the Wambaw Cycle Trails, which is part of the Francis Marion National Park.

Do you know of what this certification is that the park ranger was talking about and how do I get him the cert. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Wambaw Cycle Trails are located within South Carolina, a state that does indeed observe what has become known as “Chandler’s Law” under the All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Act. Under section F- Effective July 1, 2011, every person fifteen years old and younger who operates an all-terrain vehicle must possess a safety certificate indicating successful completion of ‘hands-on’ all-terrain vehicle safety course approved by the All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute.

Fortunately, signing up for and taking the course is very intuitive. Here’s a direct link to the ATV Safety Institute’s rules and regs for your area and click here to pop in your zip code to determine what would be the closest location to take the course. Welcome to the sport!
