Ask The Editors: ATV Winter Storage Gasoline
Hibernation time.

Dear ATVC: I am getting my quad ready for its long winter nap and I heard that the best thing to do is to fill the tank to the top? Why? I always heard you should drain the fluids.

Believe it or not, filling the gas tank is the way to go with a caveat. Why? A partially full tank leaves a lot more room for condensation to gather on the interior as the machine sits. That condensation runs down into the fuel and you have a lot weaker gas at the start of next season than you had at the end of this one.

Draining it is a way to avoid this but seals can dry out, crack and crumble when a machine sits dry for a long period.

However, we did say if you go full there is one caveat and that is this – treat that fuel with a stabilizer if you decide to go this route as gasoline does begin to lose octane in storage. Run the quad for several minutes after you treat the fuel so that it will make its way through the lines/carb etc.
