It’s shocking.

Dear ATVC: I have a 2001 Honda TRX300EX and want to put a heavier shock on it.
1- Is it possible ?
2- Any recommendations?
3- Can it be done for under $250.00?

We have all sorts of news for you. First the good- yes it is very possible and yes, we have some suggestions. Now the bad- An aftermarket shock from Elka, Alba, Fox or any other performance shop is going to set you back a lot more than your $250 budget. In fact, after placing some calls, going this route can cost anywhere from $699 – $999.

All hope isn’t lost, however. This leaves you with the option of picking up a heavier spring for your existing shock. Honda will sell you one of these for around $99.

And perhaps your best choice of all is a little known trade secret. The 2001 Yamaha Raptor 660 shock will mount directly in place of your stock shock and came more heavily sprung from the factory. We did a quick glance around eBay and located some deals anywhere from $70 for a stocker to $139.
