Ask the Editors: Kodiak Wiring Mess
Dear ATVC: Picked up a 2002 Yamaha Kodiak today (haven’t found the VIN to verify that yet). It supposedly had no spark. A prior owner tried to troubleshoot this thing and pulled off all the harness covering exposing all wiring! We removed the plastics and this thing is a total mess. Upon inspection, before putting any power to it, what appears to be the kill switch wires (black with white stripe) are melted near the handlebar switch. Could be the issue – but I was looking to see if anyone could possibly send me a wiring diagram of this thing? I’m going to troubleshoot the short that melted the wires and the no spark condition as soon as I have one.
Sounds like you located the source of the trouble – a short in the ignition/ kill switch due to exposed wire will certainly shut down the entire circuit.
