Ask The Editors: Only Runs When You Press The Starter
The fuel injected 750.

Dear ATVC: I have an 08 Suzuki King Quad 450. The battery on it was dead (it sat for about 2-3 months). I hooked a battery charger up to it today and with the charger hooked, I could start it, but it would only stay running if I held the start button in the whole time. Any ideas?

A few – assuming what you have is one of the fuel injected models (like the 2008 King Quad 750AXi), the first thing you need to do is put a full charge on the battery (or replace the battery entirely if it won’t hold a charge) and try it again. The charger is likely providing just enough voltage to activate the fuel pump for starting but not enough for it to stay running.

If that doesn’t solve the issue (but we’re pretty sure it will), you may have a short in the ignition switch. This is an easy enough test with an electrical multimeter set to ohms (resistance). Place the positive lead on the wire where it connects to the switch and the negative to ground. Your read out should jump when you turn the switch to on then return to zero when you turn the switch back off.

If this works, it’s time to start checking the wires in the first harness back from the ignition assembly for continuity but we’re almost certain a fully charged battery will solve the issue.
