Ask The Editors: Permanent Tie Downs
You aren’t kidding – the tie down strap industry has certainly not remained idle these past few years. Whether you appreciate the greater strength of ratchet-tightening tie downs or the simple convenience of the quick release/ pawl button, you still have many options to consider.
We’re guessing, since you say you’re looking for a permanent system, what you’ll want to look into is a bolt-on system. We run Erickson’s 34423 Pro Series 2″ x 5.5′ Bolt-On Retractable Ratcheting Tie-Down Strap (link here).
They’ll set you back around $45 a pair but their designed to keep boats secure – meaning they are overbuilt for the rigors of moving an ATV and could readily support the heft of a SxS if need be. Additional specs:
Re-tractable ratcheting system is simple and smart
Bolt on capability – mounts directly to trailers and boat trailers for permanent mounting
Heavy vinyl coated hooks prevent scratching
2 inches wide by 5.5 feet long black webbed
4000 pounds load capacity and 1333 pounds WLL (Working Load Limit)
Some similar permanent sets around the same price point:
DC Cargo Bolt-on Auto Retractable Ratchet Straps
PowerTye 2in x 6ft Retractable Heavy-Duty Ratchet Tie-Downs
While we never experienced any problems of the nature, perusing the reviews of the Erickson’s we’re running, it seems some users have experienced rust/ deterioration as a result of having the straps submerged during boat launches. So if you’re concerned about similar situations due to rain, there are full stainless units readily available for around $90 a pair.
Just be sure to look for the permanent mounting option on any you consider as they should be designed to accept the included bolt on one end.
