Ask the Editors: Which Sport Quad is Right for Me?

Dear ATVC:

Hello, I’m a new user from KY looking to purchase a new four wheeler this Thursday but I’m stuck between a few different ones. I loved the 2014 Suzuki Z400, but I’ve also looked at a Yamaha YFZ450, a Raptor 250 and 350. Any opinions? By the way I’m 6’1, 220-pounds.

Well let’s cut to the chase right away; a gentleman of your stature would quickly reach the limitations of the Raptor 250’s chassis/ engine. There are examples of extensively modified Raptor 250s out there designed to offer decent performance for a full-sized adult but even then they’re fairly condition-specific (play machines for track use) and there isn’t too much that can be done to increase the stock frame’s compact dimensions.

The Raptor 350 is better suited for all-conditions riding and enjoys the modern styling and sleek lines of its Raptor stable-mates but is actually a well-dressed variant of the tried and true Warrior 350 (which has been around since 1987). However if simplicity, reliability and an aftermarket that has existed for over 25-years are your priorities, this may be one to consider. Of your choices, it offers perhaps the widest range of usability due to a power spread with ample low end, a decent mid-range and suspension soft enough for trail use.

The YFZ450 is by far the highest performance entry on your short list and should be your top choice if your definition of a good time includes motocross, desert riding, high-speed fire roads and so on. It offers the most adjustable (and stiffest) suspension of the lot but at the cost of ground clearance and low-end torque for managing technical conditions. If your primary riding will consist of mud, creeks, technical trails, snow and so on, you would be better off considering a more all-conditions-friendly model.

That leaves the Suzuki Quadsport Z400, perhaps the most well-rounded machine of the lot. These machines are very well reputed for their ability to function in most environments. With an engine as advanced as the race-ready 450s coupled to a transmission that excels on the trails (and includes reverse), the Z would be your absolute best choice if you’re planning on balancing your riding between track and trail use. It too boasts an incredibly healthy aftermarket and fully adjustable suspension.

The final factor to consider is price/ brand dealerships in your area. With the 2014s coming into showrooms as we speak, there are some solid deals to be had on 2013 and 2012s taking up valuable sales space.
