Memorial Day – Start of a Safe Riding Season for All

The 2023 riding season kicks off.

Each year we set aside the last weekend and Monday of May to remember and honor those lost in the service of freedom; a tradition dating all the way back to shortly after the Civil War. For off-roaders, the weekend unofficially marks the beginning of the riding season.

Sadly, statistics show that Memorial Day weekend is one of the most dangerous times for ATV/ SXS riders all year. This isn’t sheer coincidence, though, as the occasion generally marks the beginning of summer and for many of us, the official start of the riding season.

The CPSC reports that 92% of fatal ATV accidents result from behaviors that are commonly warned against. This is super important because it tells us that these crashes are preventable with good judgement and common sense.

Here are seven important safety rules that will help keep you and your loved ones safe for the long weekend and the rest of the summer:

Always wear a properly fitted DOT-approved helmet, goggles, long sleeve shirt and long pants, gloves and over-the-ankle boots.

Only ride an ATV that is properly fit for your size and age. Nearly 90% of youth injuries occur when a youth is operating an adult-sized ATV (CPSC).

Do not, under any circumstances, carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV and never carry more than one passenger on an ATV designed for two people.

Don’t drink and ride. Alcohol is involved in a large percentage of fatalities.

Ride only on designated trails and at or below posted speed. If none, ride within your skill level. Don’t be afraid to pull to the side when the terrain allows so that faster riders can pass.

Always supervise any rider that is under the age of 16.

An educated rider can beat the statistics: Take a hands-on ATV safety course if you can, especially if you’re just getting started. Learning the correct techniques from the get go will stay with you across a lifetime. Even if you can’t afford a hands-on training course, there are free online E-Courses for all.

Happy Memorial Day – be smart and stay safe this season!
