Relief in a box.

We’ll cut to the chase on this one – riding is great fun but a long day in the saddle, especially if you race, can lead to sore muscles, knots and tender spots.

Often unsuccessful at getting our own wives, girlfriends or the girl next door to massage away our aches and pains, we jumped at the chance to sample this new device designed to leave the power of a professional massage in our own hands.

The Black Gun

The MotoMassager is a $150 (we paid $89 direct from the company, link below) electric massage gun that includes everything you need to administer self massage out of the box: A touch screen display, 30 levels of intensity, 6 different shaped replacement tips, and a carrying case.

It works to tenderize muscle tissue and increase blood flow through repeated percussion without the risk of damaging bone below.

To use, you simply put a good charge on the unit, select one of the six included interchangeable heads of choice and let those speed-controlled pulses do their thing.

Does it Work?

Without a doubt. However, we were actually able to achieve our best results by not using it strictly as a recovery tool but rather as a warm-up aid as well. Running it along the arms and thighs before a ride, race or even gym session on the lighter settings is a great way to increase blood flow to the muscles you’re about to call upon. We found we were looser, more limber and less prone to knots and muscle cramps when using the MotoMassager prior to the activity.

Later on, in the evening following a tough moto, trail ride or even regular day of work, the MotoMassager on one of the deeper tissue settings can pound away knots, remove lactic acid and eliminate pain. It’s very easy to get spoiled by these treatments on both sides of the coin.

Any Downsides?

We were surprised that some testers stopped using the device because there was pain in pounding out their deep knots. The truth of the matter is takes some pressure and a good deal of pounding (sometimes multiple treatments) to eliminate the lactic acid built up in a deep knot.

While most of us will feel the benefits of treatment immediately after, in some cases it takes repeated sessions to really loosen up a tight muscle group. The maximum treatment session is 5-minutes, then the unit shuts itself down. If you haven’t completed your session in that time, you have to turn it back on for another 5-minute run.

Lastly MotoMassager is not the only game in town. Searching “Personal Massager” on google reveals hundreds of near-identical designs, sometimes for less, that offer essentially the same package. We can’t speak intelligently on all of the brands out there but we can say that after two months of multiple-times daily use, the MotoMassager is still working like the day we took it out of the box. Sometimes you truly get what you pay for.

Conclusions

As stated above, we’re pretty addicted to this thing. I works wonders on arms, legs, back and even shoulders. It can be a lifesaver before spasms begin setting in. More an issue with the layout of human biology than of the device itself, there are many areas of the body that simply cannot be reached by one’s self so having a willing participant to lend a hand can be very beneficial.
