Video: Now That’s a Save

Joel Hetrick recovering from certain doom on the track.
Almost a crash clip.

Class, please take your seats. Today’s physics lesson is brought to you by Joel Hetrick. Let’s begin. To corner aggressively on a motocross track, perform your braking after the last obstacle but before you actually enter the turn while your vehicle is still straight.

Then, after you’ve successfully scrubbed enough speed to navigate the corner, dump the clutch, rev the engine and let the spinning rear wheels in conjunction with the turn of the handlebar “drift” you through the turn.

This was Hetrick’s plan but when his quad found neutral at the phase where dropping the clutch and hammering he throttle was supposed to take place, he found himself in trouble in a hurry. Ordinarily we would expect a clip like this to be of the “crash” variety but quick-thinking and mastery over controlling his ATV prevailed.

As for the transmission of his Yamaha, however, we can’t say for sure how the story ended that day.
