Default Need to get running before Christmas!!!

Recently bought a 2006 70cc Wildfire atv for son (for Christmas). Guy bought from said hadn't ridden it in awhile so we jumped it off and it ran fine. I got it home and bought new 4 amp battery, installed it and now can't get to crank. The brake lights work but when push button to crank, nothing. What am I missing? Don't know too much about this stuff yet. Haven't owned one since I was a kid. Need help quick!

Are you holding the brake on while starting? On most of those the brake has to be applied before the starter will turn.

First thing to find out is if the battery will turn the starter motor. Find the starter solenoid by following the big heavy wire from the battery positive terminal. The other big heavy wire from the solenoid goes to the starter motor. Short those two big terminals on the solenoid together with a screwdriver. Don't mind a few sparks when doing this. Does the starter turn?

If yes, then while trying to start the quad with the start button (ignition on and the brake light on (as Sisco1957 correctly pointed out)) do you hear a "click" coming from the starter solenoid? If yes, then then your solenoid is bad. If no then we need to delve further with a voltmeter.

If the starter doesn't turn with the screwdriver bypass, then jump your quad battery to your car (please get the polarity right) and repeat the screwdriver test. Does the starter turn now? If yes, your battery is bad or discharged (as vincie197979 already suggested). If not, then your engine is frozen, the starter is bad, or there are simple bad connections to find. Voltmeter tests are the next step.

This will get you started...

thanks for the advice-will try this tonight and get back with the outcome. Any yes-did have brake depressed. The original battery was a 3 amp and I replaced it with a 4 amp-I was told that would be fine and not be an issue??? Hope that is the case.
Thanks everybody

I assume you mean a 4 amp-hour rating. That should be fine. All this means is that your fully charged, new battery will put out 1 amp for 4 hours, 4 amps for 1 hour, 0.1 amp for 40 hours, or 40 amps for 0.1 hour, etcetera. Current (in amps) multiplied with Time (in hours) equals four.

Your starter draws roughly 40 amps, so that says you could theoretically crank your starter for 0.1 hours (6 minutes). It is actually more complex than that at such a high current draw, but you should get 4 minutes or so. That's a lot, but this will get less as the battery ages, less when it is really cold outside, and much less when the battery isn't fully charged.

I usually just go to wallmart and buy the biggest motorcycle battery that will fit.

There should be a small fuse holder & fuse on one of the positive battery cables right by the battery, I would bet it got blown when you disconnected the old batt or hooked up the new... check that.
