Default Starting help (possible bad valve?)

Here is my situation. I think it is a Kazuma 80cc at least that is what the guy told me I bought it from. It was hard to start, but once running ran great. Now starting fluid doesn't help. I have the carb off and cleaned up then I noticed if you hit the starter, you can feel the compression right before the intake valve closes. Will I can tell you I think this is what is make the fuel flood out of the wrong side of the carb. Timing issue? Worn spring? Bent valve? When I get home I will pull the head and see if I can get fluid to leak passed the valve, after I look at the timing. Since I don not know what kind of bike it is, how do I check the timing? Marks? Any help would be great. My kids are driving me crazy wanting to ride more.

Thanks
Chad

Try adjusting the valves first. Valves tighten up with wear, and they tighten further when cold. So the first symptom of valves needing adjustment is progressively hard starting when cold, eventually leading to no starting when cold.

Thanks that's exactly what I did. First hit of the starter and wow it's running. Now I have to get the valve last set. Anybody have an idea on what to set lash to? Don't have a manual, so I was going to start with .006 intake, and .010 exhaust.

Well i am now completely lost. Adjust the valve when they are close, run it still tapping, recheck the valve lash and it is complete off. I am goin to take the head off and see if the valves are bent. Maybe it will be a little easier to adjust lash. Any other suggestions?

What do you mean be "completely off"? Are they looser? Tighter? One valve? Both valves?

Valve clearance should be set with the engine cold. The clearance will change when the engine is warm - usually they will be looser with a warm engine.

Does your quad engine resemble a 110cc engine in appearnce? I'm wondering if those clearance spec's (for a 110cc engine) are the right ones. If valve clearance is too tight you have trouble starting the quad when the engine is cold. If they are too loose you will have clackity noise from the top of the engine.

I doubt very seriously that increasing the valve clearance will mask problems from having a bent valve. I don't understand how removing the head will make adjusting the valve clearance easier...

THanks for the help. She's starting easy, now adjust carbs and role. Just in time for the rain and warm up here in ohio.

Thanks
Chad
