Question Sprocket and chain question

I recently bought 2 Tao Tao 110b quads for my boys. If I throddle them down far enough so they're not too fast (for now) they don't have enough power to go up hills, through weeds, mud etc. I thought I would change the front sprocket to a 12 tooth to get more low end and slow them down a bit. Didn't think about needing a different chain, until I went to put the chain back on. If I get the #428 chain that fits the 12T front sprocket, will I need to change the rear sprocket? Or is there a better way to solve my problem? Any advice is appreciated!

you can't use the thumb screw governor? or are you adjusting down on the carb? i'm not too familiar with your model quad.

I have the thumb screw turned all the way down. The top speed is still a little too fast, but they're getting the hang of it. The problem is they don't have enough throttle to go up hills or through the muddy field we ride in. I don't know that much about them. It just seems to be geared too high for their experience. They are only 5 & 4 years old. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the response!

yeah, unless they "fit" the 110cc, not sure of their stature, but it sounds like the machine is too big for them. consider 50-90cc quads. hmmm..

Because your ATV does not have a true CVT, you are using one gear for your entire range of speed. The OEM's try to find the best compromise, and it usually comes at the expense of the speed limiter functioning effectively at slow speeds. The 3 speed semi auto is a much better choice for slower limiting, since you can simply leave it in 1st gear and treat it as a slow speed full auto with enough torque to climb the hills. But since you already have a full auto, a 12T sprocket will help (but not cure) your issue.

I have yet to find a larger rear sprocket interchange for these. You can either change both sprockets and the chain to 428, or you can go with a 12t-420 sprocket on the front. You will have to slightly modify the retaining ring, but it is very easy to do and allows you to use your existing components.

You will need to make sure that the 110b can accept that much of a drop in front sprocket size. The chain will ride a good 1/2" lower, so on some of the TaoTao Utility models, the smaller front sprocket causes the chain to rub on the swingarm.

If you need more info on where to get it and how to do it, feel free to PM me.
