Default Valve Slap

I have a coolster 125. On start up it has a horrible valve slap. To the point that it is almost scary. I am sure that it is adjustable but wont to make sure that this is not normal before I start taring things apart trying to adjust them. Also does anyone know the gap that the valves should have. Lastly I also belong to a VW forum and there are step by step pictorials showing how to do anything from adding oil to rebuilding an engine. Is there anything like that out there for these?? It has been a long long time since I have played with a carb and I can not even remember which screw is for which adjustment on it!!

Usually valves are tighter when cold, and loosen up as the engine warms. Thus your description of valve slap only when cold doesn't sound right. I'd use a piece of hose as a stethescope (one end in your ear, the other used to probe around the engine). If it really is your valves then pull the cover and see what's going on.

Ok None of what is described seems to be what I am hearing then. It only happens on start-up and it is a loud VERY VERY LOUD slapping sound.

Locate where it is coming from. The rubber hose stethoscope works well. This works a little better:

Mechanic's Stethoscope

I honestly think I would blow an ear drum trying that. It is that loud! I have the carb off and hope to have it running again this weekend and will see if I can figure more about where it is coming from then. I was going to adjust the valves and check the timing but I will have to do more research now that I know it is an E22 style motor. Not sure how to do any of that on this one yet.

Thanks again for the reply
