So why are you so keen on getting the brake light to work? Is your real problem that the starter motor doesn't crank because of the brake/starter safety interlock system?

When you turn on the lights the "tail light" will light up. This is completely separate from your "brake light". It is the same bulb, but there are two filiments in the bulb (one brake light and one tail light) and three wires feeding the bulb - tail light, brake light and ground.

Are you sure you are not confusing the tail light with the brake light? when the lights are on, and you step on the rear brake pedal, does the rear light get brighter (i.e.illuminating the brake light too along with the tail light)?

I don't know about the RPM gauge and fuel gauge. Let's solve the brake light problem first and come back to this one later.

Normally a foot brake has a spring attached to it that pulls on a switch mounted on the frame somewhere. The switch is adjustable by screwing the switch assembly deeper into or further out of the mounting bracket. These are notoriously problematic. Do you see anything like on your atv? BTW, the reason the brake lever connects to the switch with a spring instead of a mechanical linkage is so if the switch is adjusted way wrong, and you step on the brake, the spring will stretch instead of breaking the switch when it bottoms out.

You showed a picture of wires going into the rear axle. I've never seen this before. You also show some wires going through a connector (maybe three or four wires) What is this?

I can't imagine any scenario where a brake switch will be inside an axle housing. In fact the only thing I could imagine being in there is a speedometer pickup.
