When you take the seat loose and look at battery...the black and red are connected BUT then there is this small black wire just loose laying there on top of battery...You think this should be connected somewhere? If so, where?

After you make sure your batt has voltage. Make sure the plug is in under the seat left butt cheek it looks like a shoelace is in place. Also check the kill switch and brake switch. Someone may have played with the panic switch or it shyt the bed I think you can just disconnect it.

Does the wire or shoelace have a connector on either end?

I cant see the one end but it is connected. The other end has like a "shoelace" looking end with an even smaller point at end with hole in it.... not connected to anything...dangling above battery on left side

let's back up here a moment. please check or do the following items:
park the quad to make sure it ain't going anywhere, then i want you to take a screwdriver or something similar touch the two posts together on the solenoid, some folks call it a starter relay. what did the starter do? did it crank the engine or do nothing when you "jumped" the solenoid?
if it cranked the engine/turned the starter when you did this, back up and start looking at the keyed ignition wiring on the backside AND the "ON OFF ON" red slider kill switch on the left handlebar. check those quick connects to make sure the pins/wiring is firmly intact and making contact.
THEN, i want you to make sure the brake switch is working. easy test: when engaging the brake lever, usually the left hand side, you'll see a small piston that runs in/out of the reservoir from the lever, there's 2 wires there. that's the switch that must work. hear a tink? hmmm....make sure the reservoir is full of DOT 4 brake fluid.
rear tether kill switch needs to be checked out also.

report back with details. if you have a hard time describing things, if you can't post pics in this thread yet, build an album under your profile and we can go look there.
