My friend offered me a 125cc 2006 quad, i decoded the vin and it didnt have a manufacture but it said it was made in china and its a 2006, he said itll go in reverse but not forward, i dont know what brand it is or motor like i said the vin didnt tell me anything really, its an automatic, what could be the problem? I could show a pic if i knew how to upload them from my phone, the seat says BMX

I think there is a brand named BMX. I've seen them before. Not sure about a forward gear. If it's automatic, it would probably just have a centrifugal clutch, right? Maybe it has a torque converter set up? I've found that most of the motor fixes make the quads not worth the purchase. Now, I've always wanted to run a side shaft go kart motor on one of these. You can pick up a 212cc motor from harbor freight for 100 bucks. It would be fun to put one of those on a quad. You could just pull start it. I don't know if the clutch could take the workout for long, but I would love to try it for my kids. I'd never need a battery because it's pull start. I could govern it down real easily. I think it would be perfect. How much is your buddy asking? I got my tao tao 250D for 400 bucks! It only needed a battery, and it runs super strong. I beat on it all the time. It might be easier to find a used chinese quad that runs? I bet you could buy a decent used honda or yamaha for the money you'd have in fixing the BMX?

Default dont know bout the automatic or 125

but when i got my manual 250 it did the same thing. I just popped of the clutch side cover and found the 4 bolts holding the clutch springs were loose. I went ahead and removed the clutches sprayed the friction surfaces with brake cleaner (didn't know what oil was in the machine and was checking friction surfaces anyway) and put proper oil in after reassembling it. I have had zero trouble since.

ooh almost forgot if it has an external reverse box (gotta push down pedal near left heel) mine has a keeper on it that looks like a vertical piece of metal running at an angle to the top of the reverse pedal. I have to kick it pretty hard inward so that the reverse pedal will come back up otherwise the reverse box stays in neutral.
