Default Starter Failure Symptoms????

I just got my Rap's clutch put back together and went out on a fairly long dirt road cruide and after I would shut it off then try to start it (in neutral) it would freewheel. I shifted into First and it started right up. Later in the day, it was doing the same thing in First and Neutral, but started fine in Second. Is my f*cking starter going out now?!? How hard and expensive is this to fix, if this is a sign of the doom ahead.

I really appreciate any replies and information you can share with me.

Thanks again,

Wally

It's probly your one-way bearing, not your actual starter motor, I think the bearing is around $150.

Check out " RaptorTranny.com " ..... We did the o-ring thing on my Buddy's Raptor, and It solved His problem
without spending $150 on new clutch parts.

Vforcer is right. Mine has the oring on it now and starts fine. I don't know how long it will last because my sprags were chewed up pretty bad, but for now it works.

Otherwise, call TJ Parts Express and get one for about $110. You will wait about 3-weeks though for delivery. Keep one as a spare. As a Raptor owner, you might should know that this is going to be a repeated repair.

My sprags are also chewed up and the O ring lasts me about 3 starts. Even doubling up on them isnt a real solution. I went ahead and ordered new parts from magnolia tractor. They get $165 for both the one way and the gear that goes under it.

I think it might depend on how bad the sprags are messed up. My friend's only had about
three sprags chewed up ...... and the two o-rings have solved the problem... for now ?....
( it has only been about two months.)

I'm sure that's the case here too, I looked at mine when the spring was stretched and not broken and since I couldnt find the O rings needed I ran it until it broke. I found an online source for a pack of them and now that I have a bunch my assy is too chewed up to make use of them. Btw, if your spring gets munched the gear the one way sits on will get eaten up too on it's engagement surface. More $$$ take it apart and dont hit that starter again without fixing it first, it could save you that $77 the gear retails for.
