Default raptor smell?!

im kinda confused with an issue on the rappy. thanks to sixsixt, when i did a post a while back, he told me that you go the amount it says for oil change and filter...not the total unless you open the cases. So ok fine. BTW, SIX, if your there, are you 100% sure that that is what the total really stands for, because many people have a misunderstanding and are putting half a quart over.

Anyway, i changed my oil(no filter) again last weekend and put 1 1/4, revved it 5 times, and shut it off. Then i put the rest of the second quart in. i didnt bother checkin the dipstick because i put the correct amount in so i thought thats all that counts...why shouldnt it be at the right level? The next morning i checked it while it was sitting over night and it was around half...without running it. I then warmed it up and rode it, then let it sit for 5-10 min and it was just barely over the bottom of the ok zone line. whats this about? Is it better for the oil to be lower in the OK zone or higher? someone told me less oil is better cause theres less strain to push the oil. im confused. when doing a change should i go by how much oil i know is actually in the engine and stop at the correct point, or use the dipstick and make it correct according to that?

Also, (important question)
ive had my raptor for about 2 1/2-3 months and i just began to notice a smell. Couldn't really tell you if its a burning smell but the smell isnt coming out of the exhaust. To be honest, its the same smell my warrior had for a month or so when i bought it used. I cant figure it out. I just thought it was something the guy had on his hands or a chemical he used to clean the quad. But that smell went away after 1-2 months. Is it the smell of the pistons burning or something because i only had 2 quarts in the engine plus whatever was left in the filter? I HOPE not?!?! I know i cant really describe it too well but i thought maybe id b lucky and someone would know what im experiencing. It didnt have this smell when i bought it. I tried locating where its coming from but no luck. Any ideas? thanks/warrior86 btw, im not positive, but i think it was runnning hotter than normal cause i noticed when i shut it off the pipes were making that cracking sound every couple of seconds. I dont recall hearing that before but i may be wrong.

P.S. Its not the break in smell cause its had that and it came and went. thanks for any replies

Stumper?? I don't notice any smell with my Rappy...but my wifes smells like Teen Spirit...

And, dude....I think your making too big of a deal about changing the oil....you worry too much....If you put oil in it and it's at the ok mark on the dipstick...BINGO!!!...your done!! Stop worrying...The Rappys not made of porcelain...If its got oil, gas and coolant...the damm things gonna run!!! If you spend all your time thinking about what can go wrong, you'll never ride the Rappy the way its meant to be ridin'....GO HAVE SOME FUN!!!!...

Default raptor smell?!

yeah its really weird. i just noticed it this weekend. Could it be that the piston rings are getting shot to $hit? and thats what im smelling?

and what should i do about the oil. Should i put in the amount it says or the amount that the dipstick wants? When the clutch burns, does it make a smell? im trying to think of things that would cause a smell. Its definately not oil burning cause i know what that smells like. When i bought my warrior used, the scent was strong and as the weeks went by, it faded. When i first got it i took it to be serviced and the mechanic said the clutch was way out of adjustment. So maybe the clutch was burning the whole time. Because whatever caused the smell on my warrior, obviously went away after i had it. Damn this is frustrating. any ideas...anybody???

All I know is that I've checked mine and it read a little low then 1/2 hour later it read fine. Just take a deep breath and trust what ever method you choose if you put what the manual says then stick with that if you choose to add oil for the dip stick then do that. Its not rocket science as long as it isn't DRY then don't worry. DO you ever get any sleep or do you stay up at night chewing on your finger nails worring about your oil!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the smell is from some spilled oil burning off some component.
As far as the oil goes......allways go by the dip stick.....if after you've revved it a few times and it's low add just a little....keep doing that until it's in the middle of the high and low marks.
Who ever told you that the less oil the easier it is to push through your motor was tripp'n!

PS are you checking your oil with the dip stick screwed in or just putting it in as far as it will go with out screwing it in?

I agree with Shane...with the way the oil tank is on the Rappy, its easy to spill a little on the pipe. So maybe the burning smell is dropped oil or make sure your coolant level is correct. Hope ya figure it out!! I just noticed you have the same Rappy LE as my wife. I'll keep an eye on hers to see if there's anything amiss!!! ok, well i dont screw it in when i check it. Would being in the lowest part of the "OK" zone let it get hotter than if it was at the highest part of the ok zone?

and actually, i did lose a little sleep a while back when i did my first change w/filter and put two quarts total in. checked it and it was a little over ok line so i left it. Next day i rode it, there was barely any on the stick.

So even if the manual says put two, i should continue to add more even if that mean puttin an extra half quart?!?!?

Try washing that bad boy! That should get rid of that smell.LOL

Seriously though, You may be running lean, and the EXTRA heat may be cooking your headers. Have you tried riding at night to see if your Exhaust headers GLOW red??? also make sure that no wires(OR FUEL LINES) are with in 2 inches of the pipe.

Good luck.

Oil level in the reservoir is a legitimate concern. It is a reservoir so as long as there is oil in it at all times there shouldn't be a problem although the more oil you have in it the cooler the oil should be. I too get frustrated at trying to get a good reading but have learned to just try to keep it at least half way between the index marks taking the average of three readings over a period of time without the dipstick screwed in.
